Movement combination with the ribbon are easier to create than with any other piece of apparatus because of the flexibility of the ribbon. Changes from large swinging and circling movements to small snakes or coils require little effort, but they do need to be made frequently to provide variation in the composition of a sequence, as long as each pattern is seen to be obvious before change. Work using both hands must be evident, as must changes from one hand to the other sometimes quite quickly as well as changes from right to left and back again, at other times the ribbon must remain in the left hand for a much longer phrase of movement.
In addition to this, not forgetting the inclusion of all the body elements plus the apparatus characteristics, some other considerations for the construction of a sequence should include a change of level, change of direction and speed, use of the floor area and interpretation of the music. The ribbon is an ideal piece of apparatus for improvisation in the early stages. Without worrying about the inclusion of the technical detail and barring any self consciousness, the gymnast can move freely to whatever music is played and attempt to express the qualities and rhythms of the music.
